2. The organization that sponsored this even was the EdCC Anthropology Department and Center for Service Learning. The purpose of this event was and is to help the Snohomish County Airport and the City of Mukilteo balance the wildlife and human needs in Big Gulch. This is done through phohraphing animals with motion-activated cameras and tracking them. Another goal of the event is to teach participants the signs of commmon animals and how to track them.
3. My duties at this event were to learn the common signs of species in the Big Gulch and look for those signs. I was also assigned to replace the bateeries in one of the two motion activated cameras that are used in the Big Gulch to photograph the animals.
4. (A)This service learning opportunity provided me with more of awareness of the role of science in my community. I live in the city of Mukilteo and this provided me with information about the concerns the city of Mukilteo has on the wildlife within the city limits. The city has hired the anthropology department to closely monitor the wildlife in this area to make sure it is remaining unharmed and within controllable limits. When the city undertakes new construction projects they want to know the impact it is having on the needs of both humans and wildlife in the area. This experience gave me insight on the role of science in society. It's extremely important to know the habitats that's surround us and to closely monitor them. Humans often take on huge projects that have impacts on wildlife within those areas. Using science to understand and monitor these areas helps us to create better projects that have the least amount of impact on the current species that already occupy the area.
(B) This service learning opportunity was related to the course material in several ways. Animals have the very similar anatomy as humans do. It was interesting to see when tracking and learning about the various animals in how they halve adapted and use their senses to survive.

2. Rotocare
Clinic in Lake City provides free healthcare to those without health insurance. This
clinic supports many of the underprivileged and homeless populations who cannot
afford the bills of a primary care office. At the free clinic, some medicines
are given away as available, or are prescribed at a substantially lower cost
than otherwise available.
3. I
volunteer as a registrar. I am the first person that the patients see at the
clinic, so I check them in and prepare the patients record for the nursing
staff and doctors. Then after the visit, I record the patient reason for visit
and file the record into the cabinet.
4. Medicine
is the epitome of socialized science. In this field, the application of science
is felt directly on the person. The study of the human body and the
psycho-social aspects of the human mind are intermingled so that biology really
becomes interdisciplinary.
I
work in an emergency room. Most often this means that I can deal with the
crucial and life-threatening situations that strike with little to no warning.
However, there are a few times these situations do not make up the primary
populations of the ER. Sometimes people do use the emergency department as a
modified urgent care, and expect the emergency department to work as a quick
fix for a chronic problem. Volunteering at this free clinic gave me a new insight
to the people who want to be seen by a medical professional and are willing to
try and make a change in their lives. By volunteering maybe even just once it
can give you a view into someone else’s live that you had not experienced
before. I would like to keep this interaction in my memory at work, and realize
that some people aren’t just looking for a quick fix and are actively trying to
make a change in their circumstances, but don’t have the resources to do that
just yet.
In
this clinic, it was very important to understand medical terminology and
anatomy. Some of the patients need x-rays read by a primary care physician and transposing
those physician’s notes to a clinical program meant that I needed to understand
what the results and physician’s interpretations were. When the doctor states
in their record that a patient exhibits increased pain with supination or with
plantar flexion, it is critical to understand what that means and to make the necessary
remarks in the patient’s chart.
5. With
the recent changes in health care coverage (ACA) will there still be a place
for volunteer clinics that give healthcare coverage to the uninsured?
Even
with the ACA in place, are people still forced to visit these free clinics
because they cannot afford even the lowest healthcare costs?
In
my career path as a PA-C how will I be able to apply my skills as a medical
practitioner volunteering?
How
will this volunteer opportunity affect my preferred career going into primary
care?
Service Learning - Campus Community Farm Work Parties

Event goal:
This event opens every Mondays 12-2 pm, Tuesday 11-3 pm, and Thursday 2:30-4:30 pm during Spring quarter. It lets students learn about food issues, sustainability, nutrition, gardening skills such as planting, weeding, construction, and a variety of food issues.
My duties:
During the event, I helped in weeding, watering the plants, harvesting kale, weighing harvested vegetables and recording the number. I also had a chance to taste and learned how to cook the vegetables in the farm on May 25th.

Refection:
This campus farm work parties gave me more ideas about how science affected society. It helped me to learn more about the food I eat every day and the nutrients I can have if I use organic food. Also, I felt like gardening work is similar to work out because it made me have to use almost every muscle. Example, when I was weeding, I used the back, shoulder and arm muscles such as trapezius, latissimus dorsi, triceps brachii, biceps brachii, etc, the bottom and thigh muscles such as gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius, etc - bend down into a squatting position and stand up. And working under the sun is good for my health too because sunlight’s health benefit to humans is to stimulate the production of vitamin D – which stimulates the absorption of bone-strengthening calcium and phosphorus in the body. But I also figured out, we can easy get sunburn – as known as first-degree burn - which damage the epidermis if we work for long hours under the sun or maybe sunstroke which causes of exertional heatstroke. We have to wear gloves and closed toe shoes during working to prevent scratches and wounds which can cause inflammation by bacterial when we in the farm. In the end of the day, the vegetables we harvested and weighted would bring to the Food Bank. And I also could take home harvested food such as kale, lettuce, cilantro, thyme, … After joined the first Campus Community Farm Work Party on May 8th I planned to go to this event again and again because I can have more knowledge about the food I eat daily, learn how to grow and take care of it, and meet new friends, too. I also had a chance to taste and learned how to cook the vegetables in the farm on May 25th.
Questions:
1. Is that true that every organic food always better than other kinds of food?
2. How different between this community farm and the other which located next to the stadium?
3. Do working under the sun can make some people fainted?
4. When we can harvest the strawberries?

I participated in Water Quality Testing event on June 11, 2017. This event was sponsored by EdCC Anthropology Dept. & Center for Service Learning, supervised by Kacie McCarty (kacie.mccarty@edcc.edu).
This event collected data on the water quality of the Japanese Gulch in Mukilteo, WA. Our group tested pH, alkalinity, and turbidity of the water from the stream. We also identified some plants around our vicinity. As volunteers, we participated in collecting data that may be included in the Salmon Monitoring report and presented to Snohomish County Airport, City of Mukilteo, and other organizations to help aid in the restoration of the stream.
Each test that we did (pH, alkalinity, hardness, turbidity) explained what the water from the stream contained. When we tested the pH, the water fell on 8.0 on the scale, which means that it is fairly neutral. Alkalinity determines who easily the water can change pH when different substances are added. In other words, it acts as a buffer to the water. The higher the alkalinity, the harder it is to shift its pH when different stuff is mixed. The water from the Japanese Gulch tested high alkalinity, which is a good indication. Turbidity determines how much "stuff" is in the water, such as dirt from the floor of the stream and the outside environment, the nutrients the water carry, etc. Different levels of turbidity affects different types of aquatic life in the stream in different ways. In our case, we wanted the Gulch to have a level between 0 and 5, and the test showed that it was indeed in between (I forgot the actual number :( )
This event was eye opening to me. Prior to this, I only cared if the water in the streams that I encountered (through hikes and such) is drinkable or if it has too much bacteria. This event showed me that there is a lot more things happening within our streams that cannot be seen with the naked eye, more than whether if it's clean enough to swim or drink. It also reminded me that we as individuals and as residents of the Earth should take care of our homes, which included the water and the environment surrounding it. Human activities, the kinds that produces pollution and other harmful effects on our environment can negatively impact these streams and the life within it. It is our duty to reduce such damaging acts to protect our natural home.
Questions that came up after the event:

Service Learning - Volunteer at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett

I've been volunteering at Providence hospital in Everett for about a year now. I started to volunteer in order to explore more about possible career paths in the healthcare field. My responsibilities as a patient and family ambassador include greeting visitors at the front desk, escorting visitors to there desired location, delivering flowers and cards to patient rooms, chaperoning ultrasound procedures, keeping the emergency waiting area organized, making sure that the wheelchairs are in designated areas and disinfecting the wheelchairs.
Volunteering at Providence has been a wonderful for me. A hospital is a perfect example of the great impact of science not only on the society but also on each individual. Understanding of science, especially the human anatomy and physiology has saved people's lives as well as greatly increased the human lifespan. However, I also learn that one doesn't need to have great understanding about biology in order to help the healing of a patient. That is why volunteers play such an important part in the holistic care of patients by creating a welcoming, comforting and safe environment for them and their family.
One of the best opportunities I get to experience during my volunteer at Providence was to observe a nurse cleaning and changing dressing for a patient with a large surgery wound. I was delivering the flowers to the patient when the nurse was about to begin her procedure. I was very interested, so she told me that I could observe the procedure if I could get the patient's permission. The patient did not mind, and hoped that I could learn something. It was the largest wound that I've ever seen, and it was relatively deep. After cleaning the wound and doing some measurements, the nurse cut the foam dressing so that the foam can fit into the wound. She explained that this is called vacuum assisted closure, which will help the wound heal faster. The foam was then sealed and connected to a small vacuum, which sucked the edema fluid from the wound. After taking this course and learning about the skin and healing of wounds, I now understand that this technique promotes healing at the cellular level as blood flow to the wound is increased as the vacuum applies a negative pressure to the wound. The human biology is interdisciplinary because all systems in the body interact with each other. The patient that let me observe the nurse change her wound dressing, for example, came into the hospital for a surgery of something different, but stayed after the surgery was successful to treat her wound.
Some of the questions I have wondered as I volunteer at Providence are:
1. How do the staff members feel about volunteers? (Since I can feel a distance between volunteers and staff in the hospital)
2. Statistically, how big is the impact of volunteers on the quality of a hospital?
3. How does a patient feel when there are students observing a procedure that is done on them?
4. How's the volunteer experience at different hospitals different? And what are the factors that contribute to the differences?

The goal of the volunteering at campus farm is to provide students
opportunities regarding production of local farm’s goods and help them engaged
to support food banks for hunger-relief charities.
My duties in the campus farm were weeding, transferring woodchips,
planting, watering, harvesting, and washing produces. The good part about this
volunteer was I got to try most of the tasks needed for farming in only 4 hours
in total. The duties were familiar to me since my dad used to have big farm
when I was little. However, actually getting involved and doing the task was my
first time. Interesting fact about transplanting seedling was when
transplanting, the roots from the first soil should be loosen up. Otherwise
even if the seedling were transferred, it would think it is still in a pot that
its roots will coil up. I’ve learned lots of fun information about farming and
realized how much effort, time and care are needed to grow each produce.
Other
thing I realized while completing the tasks relating to this class was how all
muscles in human body are involved. For weeding and planting, one must keep his
gastrocnemius, soleus (calf of leg) and bicep femoris, semitendinosus
(hamstring muscle) flexed while gluteus maximus extended to sit on your toe.
Moreover, I figured when shoveling or carrying heavy things, it is easy to
stress lower back. However, one must not put woodchip or other weight on lower
back which may cause lumbar degenerative disc especially for elders whose
spinal bones, joints, tissues and muscles are weakened due to aging. Vision anatomy
and physiology was also involved. Under the sunlight, photogenic receptor in
retina of eye specifically cones were responsible for processing color of vegetables
and flowers. When I enter hut to grab tools under shelves, my vision got black
to adjust in which rods were taking time to sense in low-light environment. By
taking this class, I become more aware of what’s happening
with my body.
Questions:
1. Do farmers earn
enough money compare to how much effort and physical labor they put into grow plants?
2. It is dangerous
for old people to stay under the sun due for a long time due to degenerated
function of secreting sweat for thermal regulation. Is there medical or cosmetic
product that can prevent this risk for aged people?
3. How much
calories in average would it burn working at farm for one hour?
4. What will be
the physiological effect of eating pesticides?
